남산 아래에 위치한 스튜디오 후암 하우스의 아이덴티티 및 공간 아트 디렉팅을 했습니다.





Description

남산의 서쪽 자락에 위치한 ‘두꺼운 바위’라는 뜻의 후암동(厚岩洞). 둥글고 큰 바위가 있었던 이 지역은 많은 이의 소망을 기리던 발복의 장소였다. 1396년에 축조된 고즈넉한 성벽 아래 현대식 건축물과 단층 주택의 조화가 절묘한 인상을 그리며, 한국 근현대사 속 일본식 주택과 미군 부대 등 역사적 궤를 함께하며 형성된 오랜 동네 특유의 짙게 내린 삶의 흔적이 매력적이다.

“동양의 산수화가 그늘을 그리지 않는 것은 세계를 존재와 무로서가 아니라 바로 빛과 어둠의 양의성이 살아 있는 장소로 간주하기 때문이리라.” 이우환의 말처럼, 음영이 절묘하게 어우러진 공간은 서울의 중심부로서 살아 있는 세계로 열매를 맺는다. 장식성이 배제된 공간은 사물과 인간이 서로 조응하며 명료하게 울려 퍼지기 위함이고, 앞뜰의 회벽을 따라 자라난 아이비 덩굴처럼 생애의 현시로서 끊임없는 변화와 생동을 의미한다.

Located on the western slopes of Namsan, Huam-dong (厚岩洞) means “thick rock.” This area, once home to large, rounded boulders, was a place where many people cherished their hopes and sought blessings. Beneath the serene stone walls built in 1396, modern architecture and single-story homes blend harmoniously, creating a striking impression. The neighborhood carries deep traces of life, shaped by its historical ties to Japanese-style houses from Korea’s modern history and former U.S. military bases. As artist Lee Ufan once said, “Perhaps the reason why traditional East Asian landscape paintings do not depict shadows is because the world is not perceived as a dichotomy of existence and non-existence, but as a place where the duality of light and darkness coexists.”

In this way, Huam-dong’s spaces, with their delicate interplay of light and shadow, bear fruit as a living world at the heart of Seoul. The minimalist aesthetic—free from ornamental excess—allows objects and people to resonate clearly with one another. Like ivy vines growing along the courtyard’s plaster walls, the space symbolizes the ceaseless transformation and vitality inherent in the unfolding of life.
